Transit Visa to Dubai – 48 Hour Transit Visa & 96 Hour Transit Visa 2023

Dubai is one of the busiest airports in the world, a place where people arrive not only to visit the city but also to catch their connecting flights. Here are all the details you need to know about getting a transit visa to Dubai.

What is a Transit Visa?

A transit visa is a temporary short term visa during your travel that has a stopover. It means that you can travel to one country with a stopover at a connecting country, but with transit visa, you can pay a short visit to that connecting country during your journey. Transit visa allows passengers to get out of the airport and travel across the connecting country. For example, if you are travelling to Australia from Europe and have a stopover Dubai, you can take a halt of 24 – 48 hours in Dubai, enjoy a short stay and then continue your journey to Australia, with the help of the transit visa.

UAE offers two types of transit visas

  • 48 hour transit visa
  • 96 hour transit visa

48 hour transit visa is free of cost while 96 hour transit visa costs AED50 only. While making reservations it should be noted that transit visas are sponsored only by the UAE based airlines, and it should be processed and approved before entering UAE. Both transit visas are non expandable. If you have applied for a 48 hour transit visa, it cannot be extended up to 96 hours.

Where can You Apply for Transit Visa?

Only UAE based airlines in which you are travelling are allowed to sponsor your transit visas, before you start your travel. If you are travelling through a travel agent or a travel agency, you can get a transit visa to Dubai, but they are routed through airlines only. Transit visas can be applied through the following channels:

  • The echannel portal
  • ICA USE echannel mobile applications for Android and Apple
  • Other online channels offered by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (GDRFA)

Documents Required for Transit Visas

  • Transit visas for 48 hours: All the 48 hour transit visas for Dubai are free of cost. The application for this transit visa has to be made in advance through a UAE based airline or through the above mentioned channels. This visa cannot be renewed neither can it be extended. The validity of this visa extends up to 48 hours from the time you enter Dubai. You are required to leave Dubai within 48 hours before your visa expires. You need the following documents to apply for a 48 hour transit visa:
    • A passport with a minimum validity of 3 months
    • A photograph in a white background
    • An onward ticket to the destination country to which you are travelling and from where

  • Transit visa for 96 hours: This type of visa costs AED 50. This visa too cannot be renewed nor be extended and has to be applied through a UAE based airline in advance, before your journey. You are expected to leave Dubai within 96 hours of your arrival. The following documents are required for a 96 hour transit visa to Dubai:
    • Passport with a validity of six months
    • Your photograph with a white background
    • An onward ticket to the destination country to which you are travelling and from where

It should be noted that no additional charges are applied by any federal body of the country. If you fail to exit Dubai before the expiry of your transit visa, an additional amount of AED 30 will be levied on each passenger passing through the UAE airports.
